Why Film Photography is Perfect for Weddings

In recent years film photography has undergone a resurgence, especially in the wedding industry. The timelessness, authenticity, and emotional depth that characterizes film photography continues to draw in couples as well as photographers. So, why do we love using film at weddings?

Film images typically have a softer, more romantic feel marked by rich, nuanced tones. Think of the photos from your childhood or your parents’ wedding. The grain and subtle imperfections, combined with the depth of color that you see in those images create a dreamy, classic feeling that compliments the emotion of a wedding day. From a sun-drenched ceremony to a candle-lit reception, film captures the mood in an authentic and nostalgic way that is difficult to replicate digitally.

One of the biggest strengths of film as a medium is its ability to handle light in a natural, pleasing way. Film stocks have a wider dynamic range than digital sensors which allows for better results in unpredictable lighting conditions typically found at weddings. From harsh midday sun, to twilight hues and artificial lighting, film can often produce results that do not need significant post-processing.

Aside from the visual impact, there is also a pronounced difference in the process of shooting on film versus digital. Film requires more intentionality often leading to more personal, intimate images. The process of choosing a film stock, loading it, and thinking about the number of shots per roll creates a much different outcome. As you become more familiar with the process you can gain more control over the results, adjusting for each unique circumstance.

Film photography has been able to stand the test of time because of its classic appearance, romantic feel, and rich tones. It is a unique way to document a day that means so much to so many people, and will be cherished for years to come.

There are parallels between singular, unique events like weddings, and a tangible, physical medium like film. Each wedding day and each roll of film is something that cannot be replicated and that is the true beauty of shooting film.
