The Artist Residency

Gather with us in the Hudson Valley this summer, for an intimate retreat hosted by Gather Around Film. Over the course of 3 days, we’ll slow down, look closer, and explore the quiet magic of creating work on medium and large format.

The Location

We’ll be gathering together at Grateful Woods in Kerhonkson, NY. Located 2 hours north of NYC, we’ll get to relax together in an inspiring and intimate setting spanning 75 acres of woods, farmland and inspiring dwellings. We’ll enjoy meals together in the glasshouse and on the blue stone patio and relax in the pool and by the campfire.

FAQs

Who is this workshop for?

This workshop is for emerging and established photographers who are curious about making work on medium and large formats or looking to deepen their current practice. This workshop is meant to bring us all out of our comfort zones in the safe space of community so we can work towards creating our dream work on film.

Do I need experience photographing on 120 or 4x5?

Not at all. We’ll be covering the fundamentals of medium and large format photography. Everything from selecting film stocks and loading film to composing on a larger film area, metering with a handheld meter, and focusing manually. If you’ve never touched a medium or large format camera before, we’ve got you! If you’ve been working with either for years, we’ll help you reconnect to the process in new, meaningful ways.

Do I need to bring my own camera?

You’re welcome to bring your own gear, but we’ll also have a selection of medium format and 4x5 cameras available to use during the workshop. When you register, you’ll receive a gear questionnaire so we can plan accordingly.

What will we be doing each day?

Each day will include hands-on instruction, time to photograph the wild beauty of Catskills (including the many farm animals at Grateful Woods!), group conversations and portfolio reviews, and plenty of slow, thoughtful moments in community over good local food. We’ll also be spending plenty of time relaxing around the pool and campfire!

How many people will be attending?

We are keeping the group small and intimate, with around 12 attendees, to ensure meaningful connection and plenty of one-on-one support.

How do I sign up?

Email gatheredaroundfilm@gmail.com to register.

How do I get there?

Grateful Woods is located in Kerhonkson, NY a 2-hour drive north of NYC. Nearby airports include Albany which is 1.5 hrs away and Newark, JFK, and LaGuardia which are 2 hours away. We will also be arranging transportation from the Poughkeepsie, NY train station for attendees who would prefer to take the train up from the city.

What if I have food restrictions or accessibility needs?

We are happy to accommodate dietary preferences and accessibility needs, just let us know in advance! We want everyone to feel nourished and supported.
